Season in Review

2005-6

Buffalo soldiers.

Nick Chester, Billy Krause & Kyle Yeager at the New York State Federation Swimming & Diving Championships.

It's all over.

Friar swimmers return from Buffalo.

Kyle Yeager finished 3rd in the 200 IM and 10th in the 100 Backstroke.

Kyle's performance in the 200 IM qualified him for "All-American Consideration."  He broke the team records in the 200 IM & 100 Backstroke in the preliminaries and then broke them again in the finals.

Billy Krause was the 1st Friar freshman in 5 years to qualify for States, and one of only a handful of NYCHSAA freshman qualifying for Buffalo.

Nick Chester had some great swims, especially given his recent knee surgery.  No one expected Nick to be able to return to the team this season, let alone qualify for States in 2 events.

It was a great season for the Friar's men.

Friars show pride & pluck at Chaminade.

She's not a rookie anymore!

Patty O'Connell takes first place against the mighty Chaminade!

Coach Beth continues to improve our divers at a tremendous rate!

All of their hard work shows when you get a 1,2 finish (Brian Scharp took second!) against such a great team!

Congratulations to all our divers and we look forward to seeing what you can do at Champs!

The swimmers are sure cheering for you!

After hearing a Chaminade "sweep" chant, Kyle Yeager, in training for his 200 IM, swims back-to-back races, getting out of the water after winning the 100 back and getting directly on the blocks for the 100 breast.  And, he finished first in both the 100 back and 100 breast!

Personally that was an absolute thrill to see!

No sweep!

Our team goal at this meet was to have our "A" swimmers step aside and have everyone close to "A Champ" cuts get a shot at making it.

Our Captain and leader Danny McShane showed the team how to do just that!  He qualified in both events that he swam, the 200 free and 100 breast!  Danny shows it pays to be at practice.  In fact, all three of our Captains have the best attendance the team has ever had.  They've each missed only one practice in the last 4 years!

Great job by ALL the Friars!!!

-Coach Dan

The Lady Friars finish as the Number 1 Catholic School and 7th overall at States!!

States this year was incredible.  I still can’t believe how fast it was.  I never thought when I started coaching 20 years ago, that I would see high school girls swimming that fast!  Times were amazing!  And so was St. Anthony’s!

I was never so busy at a State Meet with St. Anthony’s being represented in all but 2 events.  Coach Scott and I were so pleased to see the Friars being one of the few teams hitting their times.  Our Medley Relay (Caitlyn Biagioli, Emily DiDonato, Caitlin Napoli, and Alana Biagioli) was super strong in prelims, and had a great personal best swim by Sarah Kretz anchoring the relay in finals.  Jackie Fasano, who just signed with Colgate (hooray!) days earlier, had an awesome 200 free at 154.99 and an All-American Consideration 500 free at 504.11!!  Hitting All-American Consideration times continued into the 200 IM when Caitlin Napoli swam a 208.18, and later another personal best and All-American Consideration time in the 100 fly at 57.58!!  Caitlyn Biagioli just picked up where she left off at Champs and turned in personal best times in the 100 free at 54.19 and in the 100 back at 101.86!  Our state qualifying freshmen also had awesome meets gaining a lot of experience and swimming like veterans!  Double qualifier Keira Yeager swam awesome in the 200 IM and 100 breast, while Emily DiDonato’s 100 breast qualified to come back for finals where she swam a 109.32!!  The Friars 400 Free relay, (as Coach Scott puts it… “the Granddaddy of all relays!)  was outstanding!  Just to be in that final heat, with those awesome relay teams we’ve seen be so successful was a thrill.  Caitlin Napoli lead off beautifully with a 53.47 flat start!  Caitlin Biagioli, again bringing her best swimming, went a 54.02!  Then, gaining the respect of every coach from CHSAA, Alana Biagioli nursed an injured neck/shoulder all day in preparation of her awesome 54.17!  And finally, the toughest anchor swimmer, Jackie Fasano swam a 54.29 with the best 4th lap you’ve ever seen on a Friar relay, touching out the infamous Orchard Park by .19, giving the team a 3rd place finish with an All-American Consideration time of 337.16!!  I am so proud of each and every one of you!

Congratulations to every swimmer on this incredible team that made this season so memorable!!

Amazing…  Amazing…  Amazing!!!!

That was an incredible Championship performance by ALL the FRIARS!!  Over 700 points!!  Just to give you a reference, great teams would look to score 500 points (as Kellenberg did) and think they had a good shot at winning champs.  But 700…  only the Friars can do that!!

So how are we able to accomplish that, Coach?  “Well, we swim real fast!” (ok, we know that one).  Seriously, it’s the incredible depth of talent this team has that makes it so unstoppable.  Here’s what you look at first to find incredible:  the results of the “timed finals” events that swam on Sat. only.

50 Free: We had 4 in the top 9 (out of 34)

50 fly:  We had 4 in the top 10 (out of 26)

100 free: We had 4 in the top 5 (out of 33)

50 Back: We had 4 in the top 8 (out of 30)

50 Breast: We had 3 in the top 3 (out of 30)

In Champs, you are allowed four entries per event.  THAT is our next four!  Let’s say we scrapped the entire “scored championships” and only scored those events.  You want to talk about a Landslide!!!  The deeper you go into this team, the better we are!

As far as the trials/finals events go…  we were amazing on Sat, and if you can believe it, (and you should, this is the Friars we’re talking about) even better on Sunday!!  Just as it should be, we peaked at Champs.  For the second year straight, not only did we qualify EVERY swimmer to come back on Sunday, we qualified in the top 17!!  You want to talk about highlights??  How about our 200 Medley Relay breaking the League record.  Jackie Fasano was a double winner.  Caitlin Napoli broke the 100 free League record.  And, you want to talk about making a statement (as Coach Scott put it), we had all four entries in Finals the 200 IM.  Not just IN finals.  How about all four in the top 6!!!  Do you want more??  The Friars qualified at least one swimmer to States in all but two events!!  Now that’s what I call a TEAM!!  As we said in our 1st meeting of the season… “everybody counts”!  Congratulations to ALL the swimmers on this remarkable, undefeated, Championship team!!  Thank you to Sister Lucide, Coach Scott, and each and every parent who supports us and cheers for these incredibly talented athletes!

Proud and Honored to be called your Coach,

Dan McBride

Best of Luck at States:  Caitlin Biagioli, Emily DiDonato, Caitlin Napoli, Alana Biagioli, Jackie Fasano, and Keira Yeager!!
