New York State Swimming & Diving Championships

Friar Seniors end HS swimming careers at Boy's States.

News from States:
Friars swimmers heading to Saturday's Finals ready & rested.

Managing Panic:  During his usual stretching routine 10 minutes prior to his 200 IM, Kyle Yeager inadvertently sliced open his right heel.  Trainers and coaches rallied to tape shut his cut in time for Kyle to get to the blocks for his race.  Despite the injury, Kyle qualified for finals in both the 200 IM and the 100 fly.

Lost & Found:  If anyone has seen Billy Krause's goggles or contact lens in the Flickinger Center Pool, please return them to Coach Dan.  Billy's goggles came off at the start of his 100 fly.  Swimming without goggles, Billy also lost his contact lenses during the race.  A quick drive back to the hotel secured Billy's back up pair for the 400 freestyle relay.

Relay Time:  All 4 Friars will be swimming in Saturday's Finals in the 400 freestyle relay.  Led-off by senior Nick Chester, who swam a career best time, and anchored by a freshman, Mike Forgione, the Friars qualified for tonight's finals and hope to break an 8-year old record.  Billy Krause's goggles stayed on for the entire relay.

You meet the nicest people:  At the conclusion of the preliminary session, Kyle was brought to Buffalo General Hospital.  He received 10 stitches in his right heel.  The hospital staff was the nicest we've ever seen.  A special "thank you" goes out to ECCC Trainer, Jennifer Ackerman, who kept Kyle's wound closed through all 3 of his awesome swims.

Final Day:  The Friar swimmers will compete at the Flickinger Center on Saturday and will then head to the Anchor Restaurant for the 2nd Annual NYS Chicken Wing Eating Championships to tackle defending Champion Zach Terzano from St. Mary's.

Recap:  The Friar Swimming season ended at States with our Men's 400 freestyle relay improving on their prelims time, marking the end of the HS swimming careers of both Nick Chester & Kyle Yeager.

Nick finished his career with a best time in the 100 free.  Nick will be swimming for the US Merchant Marine Academy next fall.

Kyle finished his HS swim career earning  2 individual medals and 10 stitches.  Kyle will be swimming at the University of Pennsylvania next season.

Billy Krause competed in his 2nd State Championship and has a bright career to follow.

Mike Forgione was the first Friar Freshman to swim in finals in at least a decade.  What a way to finish a freshman season.

The Friar torch is now passed on to a very talented group of underclassmen.

The fearsome Friar fouresome:

Nick Chester, Kyle Yeager, Billy Krause, Mike Forgione

The 2007 NYS Chicken Wing Eating Championships were held at the Anchor Restaurant.

Defending champion Zach Terzano ate his way to an early lead, but was caught late by Friar Senior Kyle Yeager.  Both Zach & Kyle shared this year's eating championship.

Mike Forgione quietly consumed masses of wings, but it was  Coach Dan's late run that brought the gottee-wearing 39 year-old swim coach his first 3rd place medal.

Billy Krause finished a respectable 5th.  Billy over-heated early in the match, and was forced to shed layers of sweat-soaked clothing.  The fans were disappointed when Billy abandoned his infamous "face in the snow bank" cool-off strategy.

Nick Chester faded early, saving himself for the milkshakes that would never be.

Recap

On the first day of swimming back in October 2006, we talked about our Team Goal.  It was then that we began preparing to better our season’s win/loss record over last years 6-3 and once again place 3rd at Championships.  Last weekend, these guys did just that.  They improved our dual meets to 7 wins and 2 losses, as well as placing third for the fourth year in a row!

Our meet began with a supercharged kick start with our medley relay, Nick Chester, Billy Krause, Kyle Yeager, and Mike Forgione, breaking the St. Anthony’s yards record (the same four guys already broke the meter record earlier this year) with a 1:43.94!  That awesome swim set the tone for the entire meet.  The Friars were once again ready for Champs!!

Nick Chester had to swim back to back events, but still dropped 2 ½ seconds and moved up to 3rd place with a State time of 1:48.22!  The Friars then attack the 200 IM with already a veteran, Billy Krause swimming a 2:00.53 for third and Kyle Yeager placing 2nd with a phenomenal 1:57.73.  (That’s 1.5 seconds faster then last year that won the event!).  That puts both of them in States as well!

In the 50 free, Mike Forgione dropped his time to a 24.21 while sprinting phenomenon Justin Bertuch swam his personal best time of 24.02 in prelims… and again matched it exactly in finals!!

Since the arrival of Coach Beth Bolger to our staff, the St. Anthony’s Diving Team continues to grow!  These eight divers worked extremely hard all season long to give us four scoring divers at Champs.  Led by veterans Patty O’Connell and Britttany Skrypek, (our water polo MVP) the Friars finished:

7th  - Patty, scoring 25 points higher then last year

12th – Brittany, scoring 48 points higher then last year

14th – Nick Landro, 1st time at Champs!

16th – Chelsea Strobl, 1st time at Champs!

Now on to the 100 Fly… it’s time for the Yeager/Krause show again!!  Billy swims his personal best at 54.57 for a 2nd place finish.  And Kyle… swims an amazing 52.87 and Winning the event!  That’s right Friar Fans, a 1-2 finish, and both guys qualifying for States!!  At this point, Coach Scott is pacing the deck wanting to swim a 100 Fly.  (he loves the event so much, it still makes him crazy when he sees amazing fly swimmers).  Corey Martin also gave the Friars a lift with his personal best fly at a 1:06.60.

In the 100 free, Mike Forgione swims a 53.30, dropping his time from prelims, and guess who also swims a 53…  Justin Bertuch!  Can we have the makings of another John Santangelo?  Justin swims an incredible 53.80 and without a doubt, the fastest swimmer off the block in the entire meet!

We left the 500 free in the hands of 2 of our superstar freshman, Monte Jiran and Jake Pisano.  Both of these gentlemen made it back and dropped more time!  Monte dropped 6 seconds and swam a 5:20.25 and Jake dropped 5 seconds and swam a 5:32.52.  These guys really stepped up for us!

Our 200 Free Relay, Justin Bertuch, Chris Hoey, new sensation Christian Ruhnau, and anchored by freshman Monte Jiran, swam our fastest times in both prelims and finals, and finished with our top time of the season, 1:39.16!

Nick Chester, who already qualified for States in the 100 back, swam a 57.68. Josh Willis, in the meet of his life, went into Champs with a 1:02… swam prelims at a minute, and then swam another personal best of 58.73 and blowing away his heat!!  Danny McCarthy also had a breakthrough meet.  Every time he hit the water… he went faster!  He swam his personal best in prelims at a 1:06, only to drop to a 1:04.78 and score for the Friars at finals.  In the 100 Breast, Christian Ruhnau did what he’s been doing for us all season.  More personal best swimming!  One of the most exciting competitors to watch swam a 1:10.99.  And coming off of a broken ankle injury, Craig Finnerty finished his St. Anthony’s swimming career with an impressive 1:14.19.

After watching all these fantastic swims, the stage was set for the event of the day.  The Granddaddy of all relays… the 400 Free Relay!  St. Anthony’s coming into this was seeded at our season best 3:34, and dropped 10 seconds to a 3:24.24 at prelims.  With the State cut still 3.2 seconds away… how much faster can the team of Nick Chester, Billy Krause, Kyle Yeager, and Mike Forgione go?  Well, these guys got fired up and just started running on all cylinders.  Our veterans were gleaming with confidence, and our freshman Forgione just said to me, “I’m going to States, Coach”.

Coach John, knowing all four of these guys (as they all swim for him) set up our order for finals.  Chester led off with an awesome 48 and got the Friars out to the huge lead they wanted.  Krause only made it better swimming a second faster then expected and went 50 point!  Kyle Yeager became the key set-up swimmer being 2 seconds faster then any other 3rd leg in the heat.  Now… we through it all in the hands of Mike Forgione.  This guy swims his personal best at a 51 and finishes the Friar relay at a 3:19.72!!  Holy Cow… the Friars are going to states!  I still get goose bumps thinking about the time on that scoreboard.  That was a celebration I’ll never forget!  And to top it all off, the TEAM finished 3rd again at Champs!  Everyone had a part in that finish.  The team camaraderie and spirit was better than ever.  I thank every member of this for such an enjoyable and memorable season!

Good Luck at States to Yeager, Chester, Krause and Forgione.  I’m certainly looking forward to it!

-Coach Dan

Last night was an absolutely fantastic meet.  Both talented teams were fired up and ready to go.  But in the end… it was the Friars who heard the tintinnabulation of the Victory Bell!!  (yes Ray, that gets a double exclamation point!)

When I got home after one of the best meets I’ve seen in the men’s team history, I was just reminiscing in my head all the events that took place to give us that victory.  Now, I almost don’t know where to start.

There was such an effort by every team member who competed last night that they ALL deserve so much credit!  That’s why we’re such a great team.  Everybody counts!  Last night that couldn’t be more true!

Through the first four events we were giving it all we had.  Our medley punished themselves going for a victory, but fell short.  Chester swimming back to back won the 200 free, but we fell short on points.  Yeager crushed his own team 200 IM record, and freshmen Jiran and Pisano beat their [SJB] “C” swimmer, but again, no gain in points.  Justin Bertuch gave us one of his top performances in the 50, as well as the less experienced Ruhnau and Keane.  Nothing went wrong, nor were we swimming poorly.  In fact, far from it!

But the Friars were 16 points down at this point!  We new this was going to happen and we discussed it before the meet.  (To be honest, I didn’t think 16!  I was dying!)   But once again, it was Coach Beth and her awesome group of divers that gave us a spark and ignited the Friar Flame!!  On this team we are all well aware of the talented Patty O’Connell and Brittany Skrypek.  I knew they were a 1,2 lock.  But Nick Landro??  Wahoo!  Nick pulled out a 3rd, and the Friars go 1,2,3!  The swimmers now go crazy!

Yeager and Krause team up for a 1,2 fly and I turn to Coach John… “we are tie”!   Can we possibly put in freshman Mike Forgione in the 100 free and keep this momentum rolling?  Of course!  Forgione, Bertuch, and Keane rock the 100 free (Forgione winning it!) and the Friars take their first lead of the meet!  Chester, Jiran and Pisano (FYI: Jake traveled all the way back from his club meet in Marist to swim with his teammates, and without him, this couldn’t have been possible!)  in the 500, gave us another 2 points on our lead!  Knowing they [SJB] have an awesome 200 free relay, ALL our guys swam like crazy and we only gave up 2 points in that event… again, that was huge!

Now we go to backstroke…we were conceding first place to the talented SJB swimmer, and again leaning on freshman Forgione, a fired up Corey Martin, and being out of backstrokers, I threw in the always giving 110%, Danny “D Mac” McCarthy.  Those three guys neutralized SJB and kept our point lead.

Now it’s Billy Krause time!  Krause wins the 100 breaststroke, and followed by recent phenomenon’s Ruhnau and Gerard Bertuch, give us 2 more points to breathe with.  Mathematically, this meet’s far from over with just the Granddaddy of all relay’s to go… the 400 free.

Although every Friar stepped it up, and the entire team on the sideline chanting “Graci” was an incredible feeling… it was the finish of Yeager, Forgione, Chester and Krause that gave the Friars its final victory points!!  The final score of this incredible meet:

St. John the Baptist, 90…   St. Anthony’s Friars, 96!

Whew… we remain undefeated!

After the meet, a few parents expressed Congratulations, (which I always appreciate and always credit the swimmers and divers) but also commented on how well behaved this team is.  We didn’t fall into the trap of getting rowdy or antagonizing the other team.  Instead we just swam hard and cheered even harder for our teammates.  I explained how that means as much to me as the victory.  You see, as Friars Swimmers and Divers, we always conduct ourselves like gentlemen, and we swim and act… like Champions!

I’m proud of you guys!  Let’s keep up the good work.  This season’s only getting started!

-Coach Dan

The Friar Men dominated a scrappy St. Dom's team for an Opening Day victory.
Our Freshmen rocked .... as did Seniors Craig Finnerty, Nick Chester & Kyle Yeager.

Super Soph Billy Krause picked up where he left off last season, having qualified for States as a freshman.  He won the 100 back in near record time.

Monte Jiran & Jake Pisano started off the 2006-7 season, going 1-2 in the 500.

Josh Willis, Mike Keane, and the Bertuch Brothers (Justin, Gerard & Ben), looked in mid-season form.  The NYCHSAA had better watch out for Justin's sprint free.

Brittany Skrypek finished 11th in Champs last season.  Seeing her tonight makes you believe she'll be on the podium this year.
